As we head into what looks like a fine weekend, most Ottawa beaches reopened for swimming Friday, with the exception of Westboro.

And you really, really want to stay out of the water there.

All beaches were closed Thursday because of Wednesday’s heavy rain. Rain often washes in bacteria and beaches were closed as a precaution, while waiting for the lab results.

The good news Friday is that Britannia, Mooney’s Bay and Petrie Island beaches are all open for swimming. Latest test results show the Petrie Island River beaches are a little above the crucial level of of 100 E. coli bacteria per 100 millilitres (about half a cup) of water, and if the levels stay there for a second day that beach will be closed. But the Bay beach at Petrie is just fine, as are Mooney’s Bay and Britannia.

Westboro water samples came in at 1,000 bacteria per 100 millilitres, which is why the red flag is flying there.

Ottawa Public Health warns that with high E. coli levels in the water “people should not swim due to the risk of getting a skin, ear, throat or even gastro-intestinal illness.”
