Police have laid charges against the driver of a truck after a large piece of a metal fell from the truck and flew into the windshield of a moving car on the Queensway on Tuesday.

The heavy, L-shaped steel fork impaled itself in the car’s A-pillar, or window post. The driver and a male passenger were both uninjured.

Police originally believed the object was part of a forklift, but learned when the driver contacted the OPP in Ottawa that it came from an excavator that the driver was transporting.

Police charged William Hoogstraten, 49, of Brant County with carrying an insecure load on a commercial motor vehicle under the Highway Traffic Act.

“The hole is pretty substantial. A few inches over and it could’ve been catastrophic for the driver,” OPP Const. John Armit said Tuesday.

Police reminded drivers to make sure objects are evenly balanced and properly secured to keep them from breaking loose upon a sudden stop or sharp turn and causing a collision.
