People shouldn’t swim at Britannia Beach because of E. coli in the water, Ottawa Public Health announced Thursday morning.

Beaches at Westboro, Mooney’s Bay and Petrie Island are all open.

Levels of the bacteria, which can cause ear infections, skin rashes and diarrhea, can change quickly. Westboro has had measurements as high as 10 times the maximum last Friday, but quickly dropped to acceptable levels.

Swimming is cancelled when the level is higher than 200 bacteria per 100 millilitres of water (about half a cup) for a single day, or more than 100 for two or more days.

It takes 18 to 24 hours to analyze water samples, meaning that swimming advisories are always based on samples from the day before.

E. coli bacteria come from the intestines of warm-blooded animals, including humans, and can come from animal droppings or, more significantly, sewage overflows or spills.
