Yoga practice starts from the body; uses posture (āsana) to improve awareness. This is known as Haṭha Yoga. “Ha” refers to the sun; the physical, expanding and masculine side of our Self; the positive side of energy. “ṭha” refers to the moon; the energy, receptive and feminine side of our Self, the negative side of energy. When the masculine and feminine sides of our Self are out of balance, disease of the body and psyche happen. Haṭha Yoga is a form of Yoga which uses āsanas and prāṇāyāma and other techniques to awaken our consciousness, so we know by our Self how to bring opposing qualities into harmony, how to balance body and energy.
