It’s a chance few people ever get: a chance to sing on stage with one of their favourite musicians.
But for 18-year-old Sam Cudmore, that opportunity presented itself Thursday night at Ottawa Bluesfest, when country music superstar Keith Urban pulled him out of the crowd to help sing his hit song Kiss A Girl.
“It was incredible,” he said. “I didn’t think that anything like that would ever happen, let alone at that big of a crowd. It was insane.”
Cudmore was picked out of the thousands of screaming fans with a bit of help from his friends. When Urban announced he was looking for a singer to accompany him, Cudmore’s brother, girlfriend, and a friend they ran into at the festival wasted no time in shouting that Cudmore was the best pick.
“As soon as he started asking around, they lost their minds,” Cudmore said.

Sam Cudmore, 18, is seen at left with Australian country star Keith Urban at Ottawa Bluesfest on Thursday, July 16, 2015.
Twitter exploded with reaction after his set, with various tweeters saying Cudmore “can actually sing,” that he “rocked out,” and that he “killed it.”
But Cudmore remained modest when asked if he thought he’d performed well.
“I’d like to think so, at least,” he said.

Following Urban’s introduction of Cudmore as “Sam from Orleans,” a Twitter hashtag spawned, and the legend of #SamFromOrleans became a reality.
“It’s pretty weird. It’s something extremely new for me,” Cudmore said. “Three days ago, my most favourited tweet was maybe four. Now I have 130.”
Ottawans who didn’t get to see “Sam from Orleans” sing at Bluesfest will have plenty of opportunity to check out Ottawa’s newest viral star. Cudmore plays open mic nights at D’Arcy McGee’s in Orleans on the first Wednesday of every month, at Boston Pizza in Rockland on the last Wednesday of every month, and is hoping to play the open stage at the Greely Legion Country Music Festival, taking place from July 25 to 27.
