A two-year-old boy was lucky to be alive after a close call in a swimming pool Saturday afternoon.

Police and paramedics responded to a house on Bank Street near Greely after the child was found in an above ground backyard pool after 4:30 p.m.

The Ottawa Paramedic Service said the boy was found unresponsive, and that family members initiated CPR until paramedics arrived, responding from their station in Metcalfe. Paramedics initiated resuscitation at scene, and continued their efforts en route to hospital.

Ottawa police Const. Zdzislaw Kogutowicz said the child was taken to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and is expected to be fine. The paramedic service said the patient was conscious and in serious condition on arrival at hospital.

A couple who were at the home Saturday declined to comment.
