An Ottawa man who forced his young stepdaughters to eat soap and terrorized his family with sexual and physical violence has been sentenced to 6 1/2 years in prison.
A jury convicted the 49-year-old man of sexual exploitation, sexual assault and assault earlier this year after hearing graphic testimony about how he repeatedly raped his wife, fondled and forced himself upon his 16-year-old stepdaughter, and was a ruthless disciplinarian who would assault and ridicule the girls if they giggled or disobeyed him.
He also often assaulted the children by pushing them up against a wall, slapping or hitting them. One of the girls was in Grade 3 when her stepfather pinned her to the wall with his upper arm and screamed at her for getting a D in math. The girl said she noticed bruises and finger marks the next day.
In another instance, the man split a bar of Irish Spring soap in half and forced his 12-year-old stepdaughter to eat it, going so far as to push it through her teeth when she tried to spit it out. Other times he would pour liquid Sunlight dish soap into their mouths.
The abuse persisted over 14 years and began when one of the children was as young as seven years old.
The man’s name cannot be published in order to protect the identity of his victims.
The sexual assault of his eldest stepdaughter began in 2005 when he would put his hand inside her shirt or her pants. The sexual assaults would frequently occur in the basement when everyone was home, according to the stepdaughter, although on occasion they happened in her bunk bed as her youngest sister slept above her.
She testified that her stepfather’s abuse of the rest of the family would intensify when she resisted his sexual abuse. The girl testified she eventually stopped resisting her stepfather and let him “do what he wanted to her so that he would not be mean to everyone else,” according to the judge who sentenced the man.
The sexual assaults only stopped when the eldest daughter moved out of the house and became estranged from the family. Before leaving, she warned her sisters to beware of the man she considered a father.
“In addition to the sexual assaults, the offender controlled the family through angry outbursts, arbitrary rules, and childish but serious physical assaults, which he masked as corrective or disciplinary action for his arbitrary rules,” Ontario Superior Court Justice Timothy Ray wrote in a July 14 sentencing decision. “The offender established himself as the person in charge of every aspect of the life of this family.”
During a sexual behaviours assessment at The Royal Ottawa Hospital, the stepfather denied having committed the offences expect for putting soap in the children’s mouths, according to Ray. He also denied having sexual contact with the eldest daughter and said she had a crush on him.
He has told a probation officer he intends to appeal the jury’s verdicts.
“The offender’s inexcusable treatment of (the eldest daughter), in particular, after she turned 16, and of the other girls, deprived them all of tremendously important formative years,” Ray wrote in his decision. “They are truly lost years.”
The stepfather also attacked and raped his wife several times. Ray wrote in his decision that she had once agreed to his demands to please her husband, but it was painful so she didn’t want to do it again.
Some nights he stopped when she asked to him, but would be angry. Other times he just forced himself on her.
