The 26-year-old wife of retired senator Rod Zimmer pleaded guilty Tuesday to possession of a weapon for greeting police at the front door of her Rockcliffe Park home holding two knives before she was arrested at gunpoint.

Maygan Sensenberger was given a suspended sentence and 15 months of probation for the February 2015 incident that Ontario Court Justice Robert Wadden said could have killed her.

“You were risking your own life,” Wadden said during her sentencing.

Sensenberger also pleaded guilty to mischief for kicking out the rear window of a police car after she was arrested in August 2014 following a disturbance at a medical office, court heard. Police said Sensenberger used a lit cigarette and a hand-held fan as a weapon against two women.

“She was belligerent and fully resistant during the arrest,” according to an agreed statement of facts read in court Tuesday. She was taken to hospital where she had to be restrained in a full-body mesh for the safety of her and others.

Sensenberger was charged in that incident but she never showed up for her first court appearance or to the Elgin Street police station for fingerprinting. Defence lawyer Paolo Giancaterino said although the facts about the arrest incident in August were read in court Tuesday, his client didn’t admit to them.

A warrant was issued for her arrest but she wasn’t taken into custody until Feb. 22 of this year when paramedics were called to her home after her husband fell down the stairs.

When paramedics arrived, Sensenberger was drunk, yelling and swearing and had a strong odour of alcohol on her breath. Zimmer told paramedics that Sensenberger gets angry when she drinks and that she had been drinking the entire night before.

When police arrived to help paramedics, Sensenberger was still belligerent and slammed a door on an officer.

Eventually, she calmed down and police left the house only to return the same day after they realized Sensenberger had a warrant for her arrest.

Sensenberger opened the door holding two kitchen knives. The officers drew their guns and ordered her to drop the knives before they arrested her.

Since her arrest, Sensenberger completed a rehab program and has been sober since her arrest. She has been living with her family in Collingwood, court heard.

“I intend to stay in recovery and I apologize for my actions, your honour,” Sensenberger said.
