An arrest in a road rage incident earlier this week has led to the arrest of a man in connection with a shooting on Saturday that left a man with wounds to the upper torso and head.
Khalif Shahareen, 20, has been charged with attempted murder and a variety of weapons offences in relation to a previously unreported shooting on Saturday at 2210 Bank St. near Hunt Club Road. He was to appear in court Wednesday.
Shahareen was arrested Tuesday by members of the Ottawa police direct action response team.
Staff Sgt. Ken Bryden of the Ottawa police guns and gangs unit said the Saturday victim has been released from hospital but is still receiving treatment for his wounds.
The arrest came as a result of a lead opened up by a “road rage” incident on Monday night, when police responded to a two-vehicle collision in the area of Walkley Road and St. Laurent Boulevard. Police said they received information that a firearm was involved and, upon arrival, seized a loaded nine-millimetre handgun from one of the vehicles.
Dewen Sabir, 20, was arrested and charged with assault with a weapon and several other firearm-related charges in connection to the incident. Sabir attended show cause Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the Sabir investigation led them to arrest Shahareen in connection with the Saturday shooting, although they would not go into detail about the link between the two arrests because the investigation is ongoing.
“The work as a result of the road rage incident which brought the investigation team over and opened up that new lead for the incident (on July 18),” said Bryden.
