A man accused of trying to kill decorated 101-year-old Second World War veteran Ernest Cote by invading his Sandy Hill apartment and putting a bag over his head isn’t expected to stand trial until 2017.

Ian Bush, 59, is charged with attempted murder, robbery, forcible confinement, break-and-enter and two counts of using a credit card obtained by crime after Cote was accosted and then robbed in his home by an intruder on Dec. 18, 2014 in an attack that shocked the county. Cote buzzed the man into the secure building after the man convinced Cote he was a city of Ottawa employee.

Bush is separately charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the 2007 slayings of retired federal tax court judge Alban Garon, 77, his wife Raymonde, 77, and their neighbour, Marie-Claire Beniskos, 78.

Bush’s jury trial has been set for six weeks beginning on March 6, 2017. Pre-trial hearings will be held over two weeks in August 2016. Cote has since passed away.

No dates have yet been set for the trial on the murder charges.
