Larry Hartman’s decades as owner of a Centretown supermarket will come to an end on Monday.
The well-known grocer, whose surname was for decades a landmark at the corner of Bank and Somerset streets, announced his retirement to employees at Hartman’s Your Independent Grocer this week after 50 years in the grocery business.
Employees should expect some changes beginning Monday as the supermarket at 296 Bank St. officially changes hands and is renamed “Bank Street Your Independent Grocer,” according to a posting on the grocery door.
The store will be closed from Monday through Wednesday next week as it makes the transition to new management.
It was not clear what changes shoppers will notice upon its reopening Thursday, although a store manager said Saturday not to expect much of a difference.
“There shouldn’t be any dramatic changes,” said Weston Clulee.
Loblaw, the parent company of YIG, was unavailable to comment.
It’s not yet known who will be taking over ownership of the store.
“At this time, we don’t know,” said Clulee.
Hartman became a YIG franchise owner in 1987, after 22 years as an IGA franchisee back when the chain was regionally owned by Loeb.
