Ottawa – Ottawa is gearing up for Archaeology Month, which takes place throughout August. This is your opportunity to learn more about the region and the history that’s been unearthed over the years.
A treat for archaeology enthusiasts of all ages, the City will celebrate by hosting the following activities at City Hall and Pinhey’s Point Historic Site:
Archaeology Exhibition
July 31 to August 31, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
City Hall (Jean Pigott Place), 110 Laurier Avenue West
Free admission
Learn about pre-contact and historical archaeology related to Ottawa and the surrounding areas. This exhibit is produced by the City in partnership with the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation (Omamawininni Pimadjwowin – The Algonquin Way Cultural Centre) and the Cultural Education Centre at Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation.
Sifting Through History
Saturday, August 22 and Sunday, August 23, from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m.
Pinhey’s Point Historic Site, 270 Pinhey’s Point Road, Dunrobin
Free admission
Spend time exploring the history, natural heritage, and eco-systems of Pinhey’s Point. Children can take part in hands-on activities to uncover new archaeological secrets under the direction of an archaeologist.
The City of Ottawa has also contributed to the following Archaeology Month activities:

- Colonel By Day celebrations: Monday, August 3 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Rideau Canal between Parliament Hill and the Château Laurier. Free admission.
- Archaeological Tour of LeBreton Flats: Sunday, August 16 from 2 to 4 p.m. Start at 1 Vimy Place at 2 p.m. Cost: $5 for members of Heritage Ottawa; $10 for non-members.
- Unearthing the Diefenbunker – tours: August 6, 13, 20, 27, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Diefenbunker, Canada’s Cold War Museum, 3911 Carp Road. Adults $14, seniors $13, students $10, youth (6-18) $8, children 5 and under are free. Prices do not include HST.
- Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg Cultural Centre – exhibit: August 1 to 31, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. 54 Makwa Mikan, Maniwaki, Quebec. Cost: $8 per person.
- The Algonquin Way Cultural Centre – exhibit: August 1 to 31, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 1674 Mishomis Inamo, Pikwàkanagàn, Ontario. Admission by donation.
