Traditionally, it’s stranded cats that firefighters must rescue.
But on Tuesday, fire crews from two Quebec municipalities were called on to retrieve a dog trapped on the side of a sand pit.
MRC des Collines police said the dog apparently fell over the edge of the Val-des-Monts quarry and was unable to scramble back up. Tuesday morning, a quarry employee noticed the dog, which had taken refuge in a hole it had scraped out.
Unable to get to the dog, quarry staff called in Val-des-Monts firefighters. But they lacked a ladder long enough to reach the animal and in turn had to call in colleagues from the Gatineau fire department.
Police say the dog was dehydrated but otherwise fine. The SPCA will attempt to locate the owner.

The Gatineau fire department brought in heavy equipment to reach the stranded pooch.
