The Ontario Ministry of Labour has issued a stop-work order following an investigation into a July 28 accident in which a 65-year-old worker fell from a roof.

According to the ministry, an investigation into the site at 1027 Teron Road in Beaverbrook found that the roofing company, National Roofing Inc., was in violation of several rules under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

The ministry issued six orders, including mandatory protective headwear, properly secured propane cylinders and that roofing materials be kept an appropriate distance away from the edge of the roof.

Additionally, the stop work order states that the company will not be allowed use the roof hoist, which caused the injured man to be taken to hospital in serious condition, until it is properly maintained and examined by the ministry.

Violation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act can result in fines up to $25,000 and/or up to 12 months of jail time for individuals. Corporations found in violation can be fined up to $500,000.
