A 14-year-old girl has been arrested for leaving a threatening message on the door of a Gatineau daycare centre.

Les enfants d’abord childcare centre was closed for a day after the threat was discovered Friday. Police and the centre have not disclosed the content of the message, but Les enfants d’abord general manager Jannick Bastille said it contained language “targeted at the children.”

“We’re very relieved to see that it’s finally over,” she said. “It created a lot of worry among the parents and employees.”

Bastille said a decision was made to close the facility while police investigated to ensure there was no danger to children.

“The parents agreed with us, with our decision. They understood the situation very well, and I think most preferred to have their child closer to them.”

Gatineau police said the teenager was arrested at approximately 10 p.m. Wednesday. She was already being sought on charges of criminal harassment and threats of death or physical harm toward Gatineau police, as well as intimidation toward someone associated with the judicial system.

According to Andrée East, a spokeswoman with the Gatineau police, the hope is that the judicial system will not be heavy-handed in its approach.

“The goal is to make it so that the judicial process permits the teenager to receive the resources she needs,” she said.

The teenager was ordered held in custody and will return to a Quebec court on Friday.
