The union representing taxi drivers in Ottawa says its members will officially be on strike as of Saturday, even though they will still be driving their cabs.

The strike action consists of withholding what the drivers consider to be unfair fees from taxi dispatcher Coventry Connections, which handles dispatch duties for more than 1,000 of the 1,200 licenced cabs in the city.

But the public shouldn’t feel much effect, at least in the short term, as Coventry Connections president Hanif Patni released a statement saying that the company will continue to provide dispatch services to taxi drivers even though they are not paying their fees and are on strike.

They will also be given access to private taxi stands.

“The drivers are in a legal position to strike but with the industry facing unprecedented market challenges we had hoped to avert this action,” said Patni. “That’s why we offered a reduction in dispatch fees for August and September and also offered to reduce card processing fees. We understand drivers’ growing frustration about competition from illegal car-for-hire services operating in the Ottawa region.”

Drivers have asked for significant reductions in the fees they pay to access dispatch services and private taxi stands from Coventry Connections.

The union representing cab drivers, Unifor Local 1688, was not immediately available for comment.

Since the arrival of the controversial ride-sharing app Uber in Ottawa, local cab drivers have been complaining about a significant drop in riders. In June, the drivers’ union reported that drivers were seeing as much as a 40-per-cent drop in passengers since the application’s arrival.

Last week, law firm Sutts Strosberg LLP launched a $400-million class action lawsuit against Uber at the Ontario Superier Court of Justice on behalf of cab drivers across the province, claiming that the ride-sharing application has created an enormous market for “illegal” transportation options.

More to come.
