Ottawa Public Health has shut down an Ottawa acupuncture clinic after finding practices that “could potentially result in a health hazard.”

Ottawa Public Health said it inspected the New Acupuncture Clinic located at 1340 Wellington St. on July 23 after receiving a complaint about potential health hazards related to conditions during acupuncture treatment.

Inspectors found potential hazards, including: Improper use, handling and disposal of sterile needles; improper hand hygiene; expired alcohol-based hand gel and cleaning products; improper use of personal protective equipment.

On July 29, inspectors made a followup visit and found the deficiencies had not been addressed. It ordered the clinic closed.

Acupuncture clinics are regulated by the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of Ontario and are not regularly inspected by Ottawa Public Health.

It does, however, act on complaints, notifying the regulatory body and working with them to follow up on the concerns. Members of the public can report complaints related to infection prevention and control in the community directly to Ottawa Public Health at 613-580-6744.
