Ottawa – August is Archaeology Month in Ottawa and, as part of celebrations, residents will have several opportunities to learn more about the human history of the Ottawa region.

Deputy Mayor Bob Monette was at City Hall today to officially launch Archaeology Month 2015 and to open a new exhibit now on display.

Through a series of panels and archaeological artifacts related to Ottawa and the surrounding areas, the exhibit offers a glimpse into pre-contact and historical archaeology – a period that spans some 10,000 years.

“City employees have worked hard with partners to develop unique and engaging events and exhibits across the region for Archaeology Month, including this installation,” said Deputy Mayor Monette. “The surrounding area has a rich and vibrant human history stemming from Ottawa’s location on the ancestral lands of the Algonquin Anishinabeg First Nation.”

The new exhibit in Jean Pigott Place at City Hall was produced by the City in partnership with the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation (Omamawininni Pimadjwowin – The Algonquin Way Cultural Centre) and the Cultural Education Centre at Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation. Items on display are borrowed from City of Ottawa museum collections, from the Billings Estate National Historic Site, Lansdowne Park, LeBreton Flats, and Gloucester and from Kitigan Zibi and Pikwàkanagàn collections.

The exhibit will be open to the public until August 31, every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.

Ottawa has been involved in Archaeology Month celebrations since 2013 and has continued to collaborate with a variety of partners to develop events and activities for residents. Many of those partners were on hand for the exhibition opening, including representatives from Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation, Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation, Ville de Gatineau, Archéo-Québec, Heritage Ottawa, the Diefenbunker and Pinhey’s Point Foundation.

Thanks to those partnerships, archaeology enthusiasts across Ottawa will have ample opportunity to learn more about the region and the history that’s been unearthed over the years. Visit ottawa.ca for more details about the exhibit at City Hall or to find out about other Archaeology Month activities happening across the region.
