A phoney soldier who attended last November’s Remembrance Day services at the National War Memorial posing as a decorated veteran was sentenced Tuesday to a year of probation and 50 hours of community service.
Franck Gervais, 33, received a suspended sentence. He pleaded guilty in March to two counts of unlawfully wearing a military uniform and medals, was a cadet in the 1990s, but was never employed by the military. Two other charges against him were withdrawn.
He appeared in a CBC television interview on Nov. 11 wearing a bogus uniform of a Royal Canadian Regiment sergeant. His Canadian Armed Forces dress uniform boasted a Medal of Bravery, a Special Service Medal, a Canadian Peacekeeping Medal, a NATO medal for Kosovo and a Canadian Forces decoration for 12 years of service. In the interview, he said it was important to remember those who fought for this country’s freedom. It was later revealed he had bought the RCR insignia on Kijiji.
He was still in uniform when, along with his wife, he later attended a function at the Canadian War Museum featuring author Rod McLeod and his book Vigil, about the war in Afghanistan. Gervais spoke to McLeod and a reservist for about 20 minutes, discussing his struggles with the Royal Canadian Regiment and about how he earned his Medal of Bravery.
In an agreed statement of facts, he later admitted that all his stories were untrue.
More to come.
