The Ottawa taxi driver responsible for the anti-Uber undercover video campaign says he will continue his efforts to covertly record drivers and upload video to YouTube.

Despite Mayor Jim Watson’s admonishments of the efforts, in which he called taxi driver Roy Noja and his fellow undercover drivers “thugs” and “bullies,” Noja said the drivers have no intention of slowing down their vigilante efforts.

“We will continue,” he said on CBC’s As It Happens Friday night. “We are taxi drivers of the city of Ottawa, We are licensed by the City of Ottawa, and we will not stop until we get the right back.”

As for Watson’s comments, Noja said he was disappointed by them, but said they were the opinion of one man, not the entire city.

“If we’re thugs and bullies, and stuff like that, this is his opinion,” he said.

“But we are legal. We pay our fees every year to renew our licence — over $2 million. He should be defending us, not going after us and calling us names.”

Watson’s comments came after a video was posted to a YouTube channel called Ottawa Taxi Drivers, in which drivers use the Uber app to call a car and show the driver’s name, the car’s model and its licence plate number.

Once inside the car, they ask the driver about a variety of topics including payment, insurance and the driver’s personal cellphone number, which he provides on camera.

“Let’s not focus on what I do,” Noja said in the radio interview. “Let’s focus on what they’re doing.”

Ultimately, Noja said, the videos stem from a desire to help Ottawa bylaw issue tickets to Uber, who were targeted by Ottawa bylaw and Ottawa police in a weeklong crackdown.

“We are trying to do the best we can,” he said. “Maybe it’s not the best to do, but we are helping because drivers are frustrated.”

Noja is no stranger to bylaw disputes — he was the central figure of a profanity-laden viral video that was posted to YouTube on June 4, in which he repeatedly swore at a bylaw officer and told them to “go fight Uber.” Ottawa bylaw issued him a ticket for being unprofessional, which is still being heard by municipal courts.

More recently, users on Twitter and Reddit uncovered an Instagram page, appearing to belong to Noja, showing a variety of firearms. The account was later set to private, but Ottawa police are aware and are investigating.
