A man who threatened to kill Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson and bomb OC Transpo buses has pleaded guilty and apologized in writing.
Christopher Bartraw, 28, was arrested in December after using transit station emergency call boxes to make the threats. Bartraw had been drinking and was upset about the east-west LRT route now under construction.
“I have hidden bombs on two buses. You have 24 hours to cancel the light rail tunnel,” Bartraw threatened on Aug. 11, 2014, from the Iris transit station. Weeks later, he called again from the same emergency phone, saying, “Your buses will blow.”
In a Dec. 6 call, he threatened: “I’m going to kill Jim Watson. He’s going to die for his bull—- against this city.”
Bartraw was spared jail and given a conditional 10-month sentence that has him under house arrest at his parents’ home for the first five months.
“I think truly he’s quite embarrassed by his actions. He bears no ill will toward Mayor Watson or any of the emergency personnel involved,” said defence lawyer James Foord.
The court heard that the threats were out of character for Bartraw, who struggles with binge drinking.
Mayor Watson did not file a victim-impact statement at the sentencing hearing on Monday.
