The death of a man at a Barrhaven quarry late Sunday night was accidental and police say they won’t release the victim’s name or the cause of death without the family’s permission.
The man was swimming at the quarry with family and friends on Sunday when he died, said Const. Marc Soucy. His body was recovered at about 3:30 a.m. Monday by police divers. Police have interviewed friends and family members, but the investigation into the death is not complete, Soucy said Tuesday.
The abandoned quarry off Cedarhill Drive near Highway 416, is a popular, but illegal, swimming hole. It is now owned by Mattamy Homes, which has posted No Trespassing signs, signs that are regularly torn down or defaced.
Police have periodically cracked down on trespassers and issued tickets that carry $65 fines, Soucy said.
“We’ve been trying to tell people not to go there. It’s dangerous,” Soucy said. “It’s a quarry, and it was never meant to be a swimming area.”
The quarry was deserted on Tuesday, although empty liquor bottles and beer cans, camp fire rings and trash revealed its popularity as a late night party spot. Thick brownish algae coats the rocks below the surface and empty bottles and trash float on the stagnant water.
The last death at the quarry occurred in 2003, when 18-year-old Sami Mohammed drowned after diving from the quarry’s five-metre high rock walls.
