What is the taxi dispute over?
The fee that airport taxi drivers have to pay for the exclusive right to pick up fares on the arrivals platform. Coventry Connections — which owns a number of taxi lines in Ottawa, including Airport Taxi-branded cabs and Blue Line — negotiated the fee with Ottawa International Airport, but drivers have never agreed to it.
What is the airport’s new deal with Coventry Connections?
It calls for airport taxi drivers to essentially pay double what they pay now, which drivers say is too large an increase. Both airport officials and Coventry Connections argue the new rate is a “fair market” fee.
How are the fees collected?
Under the old contract, drivers paid $345 per month. That monthly fee worked out to an average of $1.50 to $2 per fare. Under the new contract, drivers would be charged $4.50 per fare instead of the monthly fee.
How much extra will it cost drivers?
The new contract would cost drivers between $775 and $1035 per month. That works out to anywhere from $430 to $690 extra that a driver would have to pay to pick up fares at the airport.
What does Coventry pay for?
Coventry does not pay the airport any fees. It collects from the drivers the fees that were negotiated with the airport. After taking a management fee for itself, the taxi company remits the rest of the money to the airport.
