Emergency crews at the Ottawa International Airport were on alert Wednesday night after an Amsterdam-bound plane made an emergency landing after a passenger died suddenly on board.

According to paramedics, the plane, operated by the Dutch airline Arkefly, had just departed from Pearson airport out of Toronto at about 9:30 p.m. when a woman in her 60s died.

Doctors, who happened to be on board, worked to assist the woman, including using the plane’s automated external defibrillator in attempts to revive her. The physicians were unsuccessful.

In Ottawa, the plane was met by a crew of paramedics who also attempted to revive the woman, without success.

The death is suspected to be from natural causes.

The woman’s identity has not been released.
