Mayor Jim Watson wants to plant as many as 20 new community gardens across Ottawa over the next four years.
Following through on a 2014 campaign promise, Watson announced Thursday that he will press city council to approve a $15,000-a-year boost to the community garden program to help pay for the new plots.
“The proof is in the pudding,” Watson said at McNabb Park in Chinatown, where a community garden was established in summer 2013. “They’re a huge success, they’re well-used by the community, they promote healthy and active living and eating.”
Since 2009, the number of community gardens has more than tripled. There are 59 today, with a further four anticipated to be completed by the fall. Despite that growth, however, the program has seen only minor increases to a budget that now stands at $161,337.
The community gardens network is managed by Just Food Ottawa, a non-profit group.
The city’s community and protective services committee will vote on the increase when it meets on Aug. 20. If the measure is approved, council will have the final say on Aug. 26.
