Ron Eade, the Citizen’s former food editor and a popular blogger, died late Thursday night, only weeks after being diagnosed with lung cancer. He was 61.

A 1975 graduate of Ryerson’s journalism program, Eade worked at the Iroquois Falls Enterprise, the Peterborough Examiner — where he met his first wife, reporter Jane Wilson — and Waterloo Region Record before joining the Citizen in 1988 as a municipal affairs reporter.

Following Wilson’s death, also of cancer, in 1996, Ron increasingly turned his investigative skills to matters culinary. The following year he was penning a regular column called Tidbits, in which he answered readers’ food queries, and by mid-1998 he was the Citizen’s food editor. An early adopter of blogging, his Omnivore’s Ottawa site was extremely popular, with both everyday readers and the city’s food professionals.

Although he retired from the Citizen in 2013, his interest in Ottawa’s food scene never wavered, and he continued writing about it on his website, roneade.com, and accompanying blog.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Knight, and son, Graeme, from his previous marriage.
