When hurling a hefty, steel hatchet from over one’s head and watching it cleave into a fresh plank of wood with a dull whack, one word that comes to mind is “bad-ass.”

Such could be the intended wordplay behind a young company called Bad Axe Throwing that, despite its seemingly self-deprecating name, has been gaining a major following throughout Ontario and will open its fifth location in only a year here in Ottawa next week.

Joel Melnichuk, 32, started the company with his brother-in-law only a year ago. The pair opened in a small industrial space in Burlington, Ont., and since then the business has taken off — the company has opened a new location every few months since opening.

“We built little makeshift targets, got axes and started chucking them at them, and we were like, ‘This is sick.’ Add food and (non-alcoholic) drinks to that, and we thought other people might think it’d be awesome,” he said.

Melnichuk said the activity has long been popular in Europe, but more recently it’s taken a firm hold in southern Ontario. Next Saturday, Bad Axe Throwing will expand outside its home turf for the first time and open in Ottawa’s industrial Liverpool Court area just off Innes Road.

“I think it’s going to explode here,” said Melnichuk.

And while it might be the first here in the city, it won’t be the only one for long. Toronto-based league BATL Axe-Throwing plans to open its eighth location here in the fall.

Kallen Saczkowski, 34, has spent the week setting up the two throwing cages — each with two large dartboard-like targets made of fresh 2x4s, by now nearly hacked to pieces by trial runs — along with a bar stool seating area in the spirit of a bowling alley. He’ll be running Bad Axe Throwing’s new Ottawa location as the chief axe thrower after joining the team only a couple months ago.

“They get to let out their competitive side and their fun side as well,” said Saczkowski.

The instructions are fairly simple: Dominant foot forward, two hands on the axe, swing it back over your head, then throw it forward and try to hit the target. Also, make sure no one’s standing in front of you.

Saczkowski said safety is obviously a priority, but rarely an issue. People tend to know what not to do, he said, when heavy, sharp, flying blades are involved.

Throwers are positioned so that when a poorly executed axe throw clunks off the wood, it won’t ricochet back far enough to hit any of the competitors, and everyone else stays behind the fenced-in area.

“We let everyone know they’re dealing with axes, but the main rule we have is that everybody throws at the same time and then everybody gets their axe at the same time.”

Bad Axe Throwing opens Saturday, Aug. 22, at 1580 Liverpool Crt. in Ottawa. Groups must consist of at least eight people, and the company recommends booking several weeks in advance.
