The Grassroot Grannies and friends are training once again for their 265-kilometre fundraising cycle, Ride To Turn The Tide, to raise funds for African grandmothers who are looking after their orphaned grandchildren.
The 27 participants in this Ride pay their own expenses, so that all donations go to the Stephen Lewis Foundation, Grandmothers Campaign. These funds are used to raise awareness and support community-based initiatives to improve the lives of African grandmothers and the children in their care.
The sixth annual ride will begin at 9 a.m. on Sept. 9 at the Bushtukah Store on Hazeldean Road. Along the way, cyclists will share camaraderie, good food and accommodation with other Grandmother groups and churches in the communities of Almonte, Perth, Merrickville and Metcalfe.
“The warm reception and strong bonds created during this event are always highlights of our Ride,” said Nancy Hough, event co-ordinator.
Sue Cousineau, the founding leader of our Grassroot Grannies group, has travelled to sub-Saharan Africa with the foundation and has “witnessed first hand the many challenges facing older women striving to make ends meet as they are obligated to return to parenting many children of all ages. . . . After years of the AIDS pandemic, the grandmothers are becoming the backbone of the community grassroots projects.”
At the end of the ride on Sept. 11, Mayor Jim Watson will welcome the riders back at the Bushtukah Store, Westboro, at 1:30 p.m.
He will be joined by councillors Jeff Leiper and Marianne Wilkinson, Yasmin Mussa of the Stephen Lewis Foundation, and friends and family. At that time, we will also have an opportunity to thank our corporate sponsors: Bob Laughton of Bushtukah, Mrs. Joan Smith, Royal Lepage, Renaldo Saikali, Scotia McLeod, and The Symphony Living Group.
We have set our fundraising goal this year at $50,000. Over the past five years, our Ride has raised more than $200,000.
We would like to invite members of the public to come out and cheer us on as we return.
