Sumayra Choudhury barely slept Friday night.

The young and aspiring Bollywood dancer was too nervous and excited to manage any restful sleep the night before she and her best friend made their grand stage debut in front of hundreds of people at Ottawa’s SouthAsianFest on Saturday.

“I was nervous, but at the same time very happy,” she said, draped in an elegant blue sari along with her mother, Mahjabin Sultana, while roaming the city hall grounds and taking in the sights and sounds of Ottawa’s south-Asian culture on Saturday’s hot and sunny afternoon.

“It’s fun, we love it,” said Sultana. “That’s why we’re here.”

The free festival featured numerous musical performances, henna designers, clothing and jewelry and, of course, plenty of food.

“We’re not just a bazaar,” said Meeta Narula, the festival’s volunteer co-ordinator.

Fashion was a big component of the event, as many came dressed in saris and other traditional south-Asian clothing. Freelance makeup artist Afia Bukhari strolled through the festival site with two models to show off classic Indian bridal fashion but with a Westernized twist.

“My concept was West meets East,” she said. “As a makeup artist, I can create anything, any kind of look, but more specializing in south-Asian weddings.”

Organizers said attendance came close to 10,000 over the weekend, the first time the festival was held at the city hall location.

“We’re absolutely overwhelmed by the amount of response we’ve been getting,” said Meeta Narula, the festival’s volunteer co-ordinator.

Many attendees were asked to fill out surveys about themselves to get some background on members of Ottawa’s south-Asian community and help bring them together, she said.

“For us, it’s all about making sure that everyone within the community … is kept involved and in the loop.”
