Police are investigating after a toddler was found unconscious in a backyard swimming pool during a Sunday afternoon birthday party in the Outaouais municipality of Val-des-Monts.
The three-year-old was in critical but stable condition in the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario after being initially taken ambulance to the Gatineau Hospital following the 1:20 p.m. incident, said Const. Miguel Belzile of the MRC des Collines-de-l’Outaouais.
Police had few details to release late Sunday afternoon but Belzile did say the boy was attending a child’s birthday party at a house on Chemin des Terresin in Val-des-Monts, about 40 kilometres north of Ottawa, when he was found unconscious in an above-ground pool.
He was pulled from the pool and given CPR treatment by family members before paramedics arrived.
While adults were present, “there were a lot of children at the party,” the officer said.
Investigators were still at the scene early Sunday evening, he said.
