Ottawa residents are reminded to play it safe in extreme heat after a 58-year-old man went into cardiac arrest and was revived Sunday after he collapsed while playing tennis.

Paramedics said the man developed chest pain and headed into the clubhouse, where he then collapsed. Emergency dispatchers instructed clubhouse staff to use the defibrillator on site while paramedics headed to the scene.

When paramedics arrived, they regained a pulse and brought the man to hospital.

Ottawa paramedic superintendent Keith Buchanan said being outside in extreme heat can be potentially hazardous for people who have a heart condition or other health problems.

“That’s why we say people at risk — our geriatric population, people with breathing problems, people with diabetes or anything like that — it can exacerbate potentially any complications they may have with those diseases,” said Buchanan.

Environment Canada and Ottawa Public Health issued a heat warning for Sunday and Monday, with temperatures forecast to reach 32 C.
