At just 17 years of age, Brooke Henderson is barely old enough to drive a car. When it comes to driving golf balls, however, she’s already among the world’s best.

On Sunday, the Smiths Falls native became the third-youngest champion in LPGA history, posting a final score of minus-21 to take the Cambia Portland Classic by an astounding eight strokes (the largest margin of victory in the tournament’s history and the largest on tour in three years). Henderson — doused in champagne she still can’t legally drink on either side of the border — celebrated the first LPGA win by a Canadian since Lori Kane won the Takefuji Classic 14 years ago, earning her a congratulatory tweet from the prime minister. She also picked up $195,000 for a weekend’s work, bringing her season-long take to $661,818 (about 13.5 times the average Canadian’s annual salary) over 10 events.

Heady stuff for any teenager, even one who’s already been considered a sports phenom for years. Henderson, though, strikes us as someone who can handle the pressure. From her composure on the course to her calm, business-like approach to the demands off of it, she appears poised for a long, outstanding career. That she has a strong team of friends and family around her can only help.

For all the countless hours of practice Henderson has committed herself to over the years, a good chunk of her success can no doubt be attributed to a different kind of drive, a more intrinsic one. Take, for example, Henderson’s post-tournament media availability.

“It’s such an unbelievable thing,” she told reporters in Portland. “It’s not even real life yet, I don’t think. I was just trying to play my own game and I just kept trying to get it to minus-24 all day today. I came up a little bit short, but I got the win, and I’m extremely excited.”

Here is a young athlete in what should be an overwhelming situation, having just made history in several ways by utterly dominating a field of older, more experienced golfers. Yet even as she enjoys all the good things that come with victory, the fact she didn’t reach an even more challenging, personal goal is still top of mind. It’s the kind of internal, propelling force behind many of the world’s most successful people, and we look forward to seeing how far it’ll take her (even if she probably isn’t thinking past her next practice session, as elite athletes are wont to do).

Congratulations, Brooke Henderson. You’ve made Smiths Falls, the National Capital Region, and the whole country very proud.
