Police are still investigating after a three-year-old boy was found unconscious in a backyard swimming pool during a Sunday afternoon birthday party in the Outaouais municipality of Val-des-Monts.
On Tuesday, the MRC des Collines police said the toddler, who remains in critical but stable condition at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, found his way outside without being noticed by the adults or other children at the party and “bypassed safety devices” to access the above-ground pool.
According to police, less than 10 minutes elapsed between the time the toddler was last seen and when he was found unconscious underwater. Police said quick intervention by adults at the party and first responders meant the boy was able to be resuscitated and sent to hospital.
Const. Miguel Belzile said on Sunday the boy was attending a birthday party at a house on Chemin des Terresin in Val-des-Monts, about 40 kilometres north of Ottawa.
