A legal challenge to the Conservative party’s nomination process in Kanata-Carleton has been delayed until after the election.

Earlier this year, Abe Olumide, a project management consultant, asked the Federal Court of Canada to delay the Conservative nomination meeting, set for late June, until there had been a judicial review of the party’s decision to disallow him as a candidate.

On June 19, Judge Robert Barnes refused Olumide’s request and dismissed his application for judicial review with costs.

Olumide has since appealed that decision to the Federal Court of Appeal and served notice that he intends to raise a constitutional question before the court.

According to a letter Olumide sent Wednesday to his supporters, the date for that appeal will now be sometime after the Oct. 19 election. “This means that Abe Olumide will not the Kanata-Carleton conservative candidate,” he wrote.

Olumide has also written to federal party leaders, urging them to bring their nomination procedures in line with the equality provisions of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms by ensuring that all qualified candidates can stand for election.

Walter Pamic, 53, a small business owner, won the Conservative nomination in Kanata-Carleton. The riding, redrawn for the 2015 election, consists mostly of the former riding of Carleton-Mississippi Mills, which was held by now retired Conservative MP Gordon O’Connor.
