Whiprsnapr Brewing Co. has released a beer called “Slingr” in partnership with hockey celebrity Garry Galley, in hopes of raising awareness and funds for mental health initiatives.

The beer, which bears the No. 22 and an angel carrying a slingshot as a memorial to Daron Richardson. In 2010, Daron, the 14-year-old daughter of Luke Richardson, who was then the assistant coach of the Ottawa Senators, took her own life after struggling with mental illness.

Slingr will be available at Whiprsnapr’s brewery on Bexley Place in Bells Corners as well as in select bars starting Thursday. Five per cent of proceeds will be donated to the Do it for Daron (D.I.F.D.) charity, which the Richardson family created to help support mental health initiatives at the Royal Ottawa Hospital.

Daron also played hockey, wearing No. 22, and was a player that Galley, a retired NHL player and hockey broadcaster, got to know well over the years.

Galley said that when Whiprsnapr approached him with the idea of brewing a beer together, he was thrilled. But, the idea of using the beer to help a charity that close to his heart made the initiative even better.

“If this logo gets out there and helps to create conversation and raises money to help people, this is what we’re aiming at,” said Galley.

“The whole idea of the name Slingr is David versus Goliath. David was a slinger and Goliath was a behemoth. Mental health illness is a Goliath. It’s taking too many people’s lives and its affecting too many people.”

The Ottawa-raised Galley, 52, met the people from Whiprsnappr when they all attended Sir John A. MacDonald High School, which closed in 1987 and is now St. Paul Catholic High School. They’ve been in touch over the years but it wasn’t until more recently that talks ramped up about having Galley involved in the brewing process.

The idea of getting celebrities to lend a hand in the brewing process has picked up steam in the world of microbrewing over the past few years. Having a name attached to a beer brings awareness to the upstart brewer while allowing the celebrity to put his own personal stamp on an item that their fans can enjoy at home.

Slingr is an easy-drinking maple cream ale, which is what Galley, an avid fan of craft beer and micro breweries, wanted to create, something that can be enjoyed at any time. The beer uses maple syrup during the brewing process and is aged on maple wood chips to add a bit more flavour.

Slingr isn’t a limited-time release, according to Galley. The beer will be an ongoing offering at Whiprsnappr.
