The Ottawa Humane Society wants everyone to know that it has never had any affiliation or relationship with the Humane Society of Canada.
The Ottawa society was inundated with questions from supporters after the Citizen reported this week that the Federal Court of Appeal had upheld a decision to revoke the Toronto-based Humane Society of Canada’s charitable status.
That prompted the Ottawa society to issue a statement Thursday afternoon distancing itself from the Toronto organization.
“We want to reassure our loyal supporters and community that the Ottawa Humane Society has absolutely nothing to do with the Humane Society of Canada,” executive director Bruce Roney said. “It’s like comparing apples and oranges.”
In the statement, Roney said the Ottawa Humane Society has been concerned about the practices of the Humane Society of Canada for more than a decade.
“We’re grateful for this process but we’re also concerned that when this happens, it can distract from the very good work of humane societies across the country,” he said.
The only national organization that represents humane societies in Canada is the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies, the statement emphasized.
Roney said the Ottawa Humane Society, a registered charity founded in 1888, will continue to care for 10,000 animals a year and issue tax receipts to donors.
