Rookie Bloc Québécois candidate Maude Chouinard-Boucher is finding out the hard way that no well-intentioned deed goes unpunished in politics.
Chouinard-Boucher, 22, a Montreal native who’s been in Gatineau for the past three years as a social sciences student at Université du Québec en Outaouais, thought it’d be a good idea to put her name forward as a Bloquiste candidate in Hull-Aylmer about a month ago.
This, even though the Hull-Aylmer battle is pretty much a duel of the titans between NDP incumbent Nycole Turmel and Liberal heavyweight Greg Fergus. Those two parties combined for 80 per cent of the popular vote in the last federal election.
But the Bloc was enjoying a bit of attention a while back with the return of long-time leader Jean Duceppe and, with no early volunteers for candidacy in Hull-Aylmer, Chouinard-Boucher figured she could carry the flag, meet some voters and pass along some party policy goodness.
She’s learning that youthful enthusiasm and good intentions aren’t necessarily enough in the electoral snakepit.
Her first mistake was probably to go on an Outaouais ‘choque-radio’ interview before she was quite ready. By several accounts in the local media, Chouinard-Boucher came across as, well, less than well-prepared.
So Team Chouinard-Boucher has decided to forego any formal interviews until at least Sept. 1. Instead, she’ll concentrate on old-fashioned door-to-door, walking the malls, etc. to spread her message
“We’re taking it slowly,” she said in a recent chat. “The volunteers are coming gradually, we’re meeting the voters.
“I’m having fun.”
