Another one-time senior aide to Prime Minister Stephen Harper is expected to make an appearance in the witness box as the criminal fraud trial of suspended Senator Mike Duffy heads into its final week of hearings before going on hiatus until mid-November.
According to the email archives previously submitted as evidence, Chris Woodcock — who was serving as Harper’s director of issues management at the time, and is now a senior official at the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation – was deeply involved in the clandestine campaign to convince Duffy to repay thousands of dollars in questionable Senate housing and living expenses.
As was the case for his former PMO colleagues Nigel Wright and Ben Perrin, Woodcock will likely be asked to detail the negotiations with Duffy and his then-lawyer Janice Payne over the proposed repayment plan — as well as any knowledge he might have had on Wright’s decision to pay off Duffy’s $90,000 tab with personal funds.
Today’s proceedings are slated to get underway at 10 a.m. ET, and Kady O’Malley will have full coverage.
