The federal Green Party was well represented at City Hall Monday, sending all of its Ottawa-area nominated candidates, three Gatineau-area candidates and the chief executive of the Ottawa West-Nepean riding association (which has yet to select a candidate) to Mayor Jim Watson’s second briefing session.

Similar to the first session, held for the Liberal Party last Thursday, the meeting addressed local concerns including infrastructural needs, community housing and future transit planning.

Discussions were again held behind closed doors, followed by a brief session open to reporters as Watson addressed planned celebrations for Canada’s 150th anniversary. These included bids to hold the Juno Awards and the NHL Outdoor Classic in the nation’s capital.

One sticking point the Green Party wanted to address, said Kanata-Carleton candidate Andrew West, was the delay in the third phase of the city’s planned light rail expansion. Stage two, which the city says will “bring close to 70 per cent of the City’s population within five kilometres of rail transit,” is scheduled to be complete by 2023.

According to West, stage three isn’t scheduled to start until 2031, a full eight years later.

“I know that environmental assessments have to be done,” he said. “That’s something that they brought up, and obviously we’re all in favour of environmental assessment. But to wait eight years for that assessment is a bit long, especially since they’re talking about temporarily having increased bus traffic from Bayshore into Kanata. Most people are probably just going to drive to Bayshore.”

Deborah Coyne, the candidate for Carleton, said the meeting was “very cordial.” But, she added, the federal Greens want to be sure financing is there for any plans moving forward.

“The main thing (is) actually finding the revenues to fund all the things we have to do in order to have a good economy and support people,” she said.

Watson will meet with Conservative Party candidates Tuesday. A meeting with the NDP is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 3.
