The Ottawa Airport has obtained eight trespass notices against taxi protesters over the past two weeks after incidents of violence, threatening behaviour and refusal to cooperate, officials say.

Airport Authority spokesperson Krista Kealey said that three notices were issued Tuesday morning. The others were last week.

“When the dispute really started to heat up, there were some actions by some of the drivers — both Blue Line and the Airport (branded cabs) — that … caused us to file for the injunction because we were not going to compromise on the safety and security of our passengers or employees,” she said. “There were some behaviours that couldn’t be tolerated. There was intimidation, harassment, there were some physical altercations, there was some egg-throwing, some passengers removed from vehicles, that sort of thing.”

The court injunction, which was granted on Aug. 14, limits the number of protesters allowed at any given moment and specifies areas in which they are allowed to protest.

Kealey said that the protesters who were issued the trespass notices did not represent the majority of the locked-out workers.

“We’ve been working very closely with the Ottawa police to maintain the calm,” she said. “We’re very happy … that, for the most part, the protest is absolutely abiding by the terms and conditions of the injunction. However, from time to time, things pop up and they need to be dealt with.”

Although she added that the airport would be within its rights to press criminal charges, Kealey said they decided on trespass notices instead in the hopes of maintaining civility.

“It’s a hope in general that the situation doesn’t escalate,” she said. “We respect the right to protest and to be heard, but we cannot compromise on safety and security.”
