Veteran community activist Marlene Rivier was nominated as the NDP candidate in Ottawa West-Nepean Tuesday, beating three challengers including former Ottawa city councillor Alex Cullen.
Cullen was runner-up on the last of three ballots at a packed Ukrainian Orthodox Hall on Byron Ave.
Rivier, who is the current president of the Ottawa West-Nepean NDP riding association, will face Conservative Abdul Abdi, Liberal Anita Vandenbeld and Rod Taylor for Christian Heritage. The Green Party expects to announce its candidate after Labour Day.
Ottawa West-Nepean, created in 1996, has had just two MPs: Liberal Marlene Catterall and Conservative John Baird, who held the seat from 2006 until his resignation from politics last February.
With the federal election pending, it has had no representation in the House of Commons since Baird quit.
The riding has 109,000 residents, nearly 28 per cent of whom were born outside of Canada. One in five are seniors. Asians are the largest visible minority, but the riding also boasts a sizable Muslim population.
Boundaries have changed only slightly as a result of the latest redistribution, with some houses on the south side of Baseline Road and the west side of Fisher Avenue added to the riding.
