Gatineau police were doing their usual duty, serving warrants and arresting suspected drug dealers at four homes, when they walked into an explosive surprise.
An apartment they raided in Buckingham had marijuana, speed, $23,000 in cash — and what looked like an unexploded artillery shell.
They blocked off Buckingham Avenue and waited for bomb experts to come from the Sûreté du Québec and from CFB Petawawa, more than 200 kilometres away. The army took it away and no one was hurt.
The shell was real, manufactured in the 1970s, but wasn’t able to explode.
The police report doesn’t say how big the shell was.
About 12 people who were evacuated from their homes were allowed back by 10:30 p.m.
