Two Ottawa police officers “acted valiantly” in trying to save a murder suspect who had jumped into the Rideau River, provincial investigators have found.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit said the officers made repeated attempts to find Muhab Sultan, wanted in a much-publicized slaying over a stolen cellphone in London, Ont., after he disappeared into the river in a downtown Ottawa neighbourhood while trying to elude police on the night of June 24.
“They were tantalizingly close to reaching him before he dipped out of sight below the water’s surface.
“The officers remained in the river for a period of time and dove underwater to search for Mr. Sultan, but the water’s murkiness made the effort a futile one,” said SIU acting director Joseph Martino.
