Sean Devine has a proven track record as a leader in the Canadian cultural sector. An executive administrator, artist and activist for the past two decades, Sean believes that community engagement leads to positive social change. Entrepreneurial and innovative, Sean will bring a fresh perspective to the issues facing our community today.

“My wife Alexa and I live with our three kids in a vibrant, middle-class, community-minded neighbourhood in Nepean. When we volunteer at our school's parent council, when I'm shovelling the local rink, when we help out at our kids soccer league, deliver Christmas baskets through our local United Church, or attend the backyard gatherings and block parties, I'm constantly inspired by the impact that community engagement has on our lives. Our community is connected to its residents. It's a great place to live.

For the past two decades, I’ve made my living in the professional arts. My greatest satisfaction has come from creating cultural experiences which make a lasting impact on people's lives, which resonate with the social justice issues that matter to me, and which reinforce my belief that members of a community engaging with each other is the best opportunity for building a better society.

I've managed several not-for-profits in Ottawa and Vancouver, helping to build them into thriving companies. I'm an accomplished fundraiser and grant writer who has raised over $900,000 for multiple organizations. I'm a published playwright whose plays have been seen in Ottawa, Vancouver, New York and Seattle. I've produced ten years worth of multicultural arts festivals. Earlier this year I traveled to Reykjavik to meet with a former member of Iceland's Parliament to discuss her involvement in the re-writing of Iceland's constitution, and then to Greenland to begin a collaboration with Greenlandic indigenous artists. I regularly mentor emerging artists and arts managers, and was a guest speaker at Ottawa's Creative Capital Exchange at City Hall earlier this year.

I'm a co-founder and artistic director of Horseshoes & Hand Grenades, an award-winning theatre company known for our innovative community engagement projects, as well as for our insightful and provocative works. I work collaboratively with artists, facilitators, researchers and the public to create projects which explore issues which affect all of our lives.

Over the last several years, my commitment to social justice and community engagement has led me to become more politically active, both in my artistic and my personal life. And so I've decided to direct my energy into politics. When it comes to matters that I believe in, I’m a passionate, outspoken and tireless advocate. I know what it takes to communicate a vision for action and to get the work done. I can’t wait to share with you the issues that matter most to me, as well as to hear how I can best represent what matters to you.

I'm fortunate to have been able to make my living doing what I love to do, and that I get to make a lasting impact on people's lives. It's this commitment to building a better society, and my firm belief in the policies and principles of Tom Mulcair and the NDP that has led me to seek the nomination to represent Nepean in the upcoming election. And I'd be proud to follow in the footsteps of Wendy Lill, former NDP Member of Parliament for Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, who also was a playwright before she entered into the politics. It takes all kinds of people to form an effective and representative government, and I know that I can bring something unique and powerful to the NDP."
