A former CFL quarterback, who was extradited from Ottawa five years ago to face charges of having an improper relationship with a student, has been found dead in Aledo, Texas, after apparently committing suicide, according to a report from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Cody Ledbetter, 42, played for the Edmonton Eskimos and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats before returning home after his professional career ended.
In 2005, he pleaded guilty to having sex with a 16-year-old in 2004. He was then charged with having sex with another young victim. Ledbetter fled to Canada before being sentenced in the 2004 case.
In 2010, he surrendered to the Ottawa Police Service and was accused of assault causing bodily harm and uttering threats against his pregnant former girlfriend. While in custody, the criminal charges were stayed and he was extradited to Texas where, in January 2011, he was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Ledbetter was recently released from prison on parole.
