The carillon bells of the Peace Tower will play a special concert at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in honour of Queen Elizabeth, but Anglican Church bells will remain silent.
The 30-minute recital by Andrea McCrady, the Dominion Carillonneur, will feature music related to the Queen’s reign.
Selections include: O Canada, Westminster by Robert Byrnes; Coronation March, by Clifford Ball; Pipe Tune: Highland Cathedral, by Michael Korb and Ulvrich Roever, arranged by Andrea McCrady; Medley of Canadian Travel Songs, arranged by Andrea McCrady (Come to Canada, V’la l’bon vent, The Chapeau Boys); and Canada, A Centennial Song, by Bobby Gimby.
Meanwhile the Anglican diocese has recommended that churches not ring their bells in celebration of the event.
“In Ottawa we’re not encouraging the bell ringing, only because we took part in ringing the bells for 22 days for the Truth and Reconciliation (Commission), in honour of murdered and missing aboriginal women,” said Stephanie Boyd of the diocese office.
She said some churches are still ringing bells to honour the missing and murdered women, and ringing them to celebrate the Queen’s event might cause confusion.
The decision is left to local parishes.
Instead there will be a choral evensong to celebrate the Queen’s reign Thursday at 6 p.m. at Christ Church Cathedral.
