The parents of homicide victim Melissa Richmond have rebuilt a memorial to their slain daughter after it was vandalized last month.

On Monday, Richmond’s parents Raymond and Millie Evans replaced photos that were taken from the memorial, which sits atop a metal guardrail on the perimeter of South Keys Shopping Centre near the spot where the 28-year-old was found in the summer of 2013.

“I’m not letting anyone besmirch my daughter’s memory and that’s what happened when they vandalized that memorial,” said Raymond Evans.

Vandals had removed multiple photographs and other items identifying Richmond from the memorial, which included stuffed animals, artificial flowers that could withstand the winter months and other trinkets.

The vandalism occurred just weeks before her husband, Howard Richmond, is set to stand trial on charges of first-degree murder in her slaying. The trial is scheduled to begin Sept. 28.

Ottawa police Det. Chris Benson, the homicide detective who investigated Richmond’s killing, said it’s still not clear who damaged the memorial or why.
