“Perfect done right” is the Hy’s Steakhouse motto to promote its five high-end restaurants in Canada, including one on Queen Street in downtown Ottawa. Unfortunately for steak lovers, the Ottawa branch is closing its doors early in the new year.

“We couldn’t renegotiate the terms of our lease, and at the current time we don’t plan to reopen,” company spokeswoman Karyn Bryne said Wednesday, explaining that the restaurant will close in February 2016 when the lease expires.

The Vancouver company, which marks its 60th anniversary in October, has four other establishments across the country — Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, and Whistler, B.C. The Ottawa location in the Sun Life Building, with its restaurant and cocktail bar and known for its fine food and pleasant ambience, has been popular with businessmen, politicians and journalists since it opened in 1985.

It has, it seems, maintained a largely positive reputation, at least judging by remarks on social media.

“I like the atmosphere and bartenders, ours was really nice and attentive,” one customer posted on Yelp. “I would came back just for drinks and to hang out/catch up for a few hours.”

“True gentlemen’s club. Love coming here after work for a nice tall glass of wine to survey the local bureaucrats and chat with my favorite bartender,” another posted. “The atmosphere at Hy’s is as good as it gets. Hot spinach mushroom salad and steak tartare are to die for.”

At least one patron noted the clientele.

“Hy’s is a typical Ottawa political hangout. It is the venue of choice for Members of Parliament, Senators, staffers and lobbyists who often gather there on week nights after work for drinks at the bar.”

Bryne said the company was unable to agree on a lease renewal with the building’s landlord. “We have hoped to renegotiate the lease with the current landlord but we couldn’t.

“That combined with the outlook for business in Ottawa, and we didn’t think it would be good business decision to reopen (elsewhere) at this time.”

The Ottawa restaurant, which employs about 40 people, is the only one in the chain being closed.

“We’re doing just fine in the other parts of the country,” Bryne said.
