Ottawa police have charged three Ottawa taxi drivers for acts of vandalism, including attacking a Blue Line cab with a customer inside, during a protest on the Airport Parkway on Tuesday.

At the protest, more than 100 drivers stood or sat on the Airport Parkway overpass, chanting and waving banners, forcing police to reroute traffic down to Uplands Drive.

The drivers packed up their banners and moved off the bridge at about 12:20 p.m., about three hours after the demonstration began.

They returned later in the afternoon to again block the overpass. This time, Airport Taxi drivers attacked a passing Blue Line cab, smashing the rear window as it drove past the protesters and accelerated away. The assault was captured on camera by a passerby and posted on YouTube.

After receiving a number of calls and tips, police arrested three drivers. They did not release the drivers’ identities, and they are scheduled to appear in court Friday morning.

Each faces one count of mischief over $5,000 and one count of possession of a dangerous weapon.

“Our officers have been working with all those involved in the labour dispute to ensure public safety,” said Ottawa police Chief Charles Bordeleau in a statement. “Any incidents of violence will not be tolerated and are fully investigated. People will be held accountable for their actions.”
