The Barber of Seville, the rascal Figaro, made a stop to cut some hair and sing one of the most famous baritone arias, Largo al factotum, at the House of Barons Barber Shop on Thursday.
This Figaro, played by Opera Lyra’s Joshua Hopkins, did not have any tonsorial experience before the event, but the ByWard Market barbers gave him a quick lesson before he snipped away at some celebrity patrons.
Mayor Jim Watson was given a close shave by a professional, not the novice Hopkins, wisely, and “butterfly child” Jonathan Pitre also received a cut from senior barber James Fowler.
Hopkins will star in the Opera Lyra production of the comedic Rossini opera, set in a 1940’s movie studio, from Sept. 26 to Oct. 3 at the National Arts Centre.

Opera Lyra’s Joshua Hopkins serenades spectators outside House of Barons.

Jonathan Pitre gets a cut by House of Barons senior barber, James Fowler.

House of Barons senior barber, Charles Moubarak, left, gives Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson a close shave.
